Real Estate Tax Exemption for Surviving Spouse of Member of the Armed Forces who Died in the Line of Duty

In accordance with the Code of Virginia § 58.1-3219.9

 The Surviving Spouse of any Member of the U. S. armed forces who died in the line of duty with a Line of Duty determination from the U. S. Department of Defense and who owns and occupies the real property as their principal place of residence may qualify for an exemption effective on or after January 1, 2015.

Documentation required to apply:

  1. Completed application, which must be submitted to this office in person.
  2. Documentation from the United States Department of Defense or its successor agency indicating the date that the member of the armed forces died in the line of duty.
  3. Proof of marriage.
  4. Copy of Surviving Spouse’s current Virginia driver’s license.
  5. Copy of Surviving Spouse’s recent utility bill as proof of residency.
