Asian Giant Hornet "Murder Hornets"

Asian Giant Hornets (Vespa mandarinia) named ‘Murder Hornets’ in popular media are not expected to be in VA in the near future. The European Hornet (Vespa crabro) is commonly found in the United States. It was first reported in North America around 1840 in New York and has spread to most of the Eastern United States. They are about 1½ inch long and resemble a large yellowjacket wasp. Other species that are commonly misidentified as Asian Giant Hornets are Asian yellow-legged Hornet (Vespa velutina) and the Cicada Killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus). Here is a VCE link to help you identify the difference between these species: https://www.ento.vt.edu/News/Asian_Giant_Hornet.html
