Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

Volunteers in Police ServiceThe Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program is a national initiative sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). The program provides guidance, resources, and best practices to law enforcement agencies nationwide to help integrate community volunteers into police and sheriff’s office operations.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office VIPS Program offers community members a unique opportunity to actively support local law enforcement while strengthening partnerships between the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens it serves. VIPS volunteers play a vital role by assisting with non-enforcement functions that enhance public safety, community outreach, and operational efficiency.

Volunteer Opportunities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Administrative Assistance -  Providing clerical and office support, assisting staff with projects, and helping ensure daily operations run smoothly.
  • Crime Prevention -  Supporting crime prevention initiatives, distributing educational materials, and promoting public awareness of safety programs.
  • National Night Out - Assisting with planning, setup, and participation in this annual nationwide event that promotes police-community partnerships.
  • Neighborhood Watch -  Supporting Neighborhood Watch programs and helping foster communication between residents and the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Special Events - Assisting at community events, public safety outreach programs, parades, and Sheriff’s Office-sponsored activities.
