One-stop home contractor is unstoppable

Custom Design Works enters 40th year of  home building and remodeling

By Melissa James,  York County Contributor

For 40 years, Custom Design Works has been offering a one-stop resource for homeowners and businesses seeking design, remodeling or building services. Not only can customers get everything from one builder, but the company is known for its design excellence and surprisingly good pricing.

“We are able to keep costs low not because we use subpar materials or labor, but because we work hard to secure discounts that we then pass on to our customers,” said owner Tony Collins. Since its founding in 1984, this full-service contracting company has carried forward Collins’ artistic vision.

Collins grew up on the Peninsula, in both Newport News and Hampton. Throughout high school and the years following, Collins developed a strong interest in art, which he fueled by taking art lessons and classes in industrial art. When some of his artwork was featured in a local newspaper, Collins suddenly began receiving calls from people asking him to draw kitchens, bathrooms, even entire houses for them. Others wanted him to oversee the contractors who were hired to remodel their homes.

“I loved everything about it, the work, the people, all of it,” said Collins, “I felt like I was making a difference in people’s lives.”

Not long after, Custom Design Works was born. Collins believes what sets his company apart from the many other custom home builders in the area is that they do it all—and do it all in-house. Whether it’s simple trim work, a kitchen remodel or designing a whole new house, Collins and his team give it the same level of detail and care.

The majority of their workload involves residential projects, and about 20% is commercial. They also serve as the main professional installer for The Home Depot, so when customers come into the store to purchase new cabinets, countertops, bathtubs and more for their home, Custom Design Works completes the project.

Custom Design Works moved into its current building on Coventry Blvd, just off Route 17, in 2006. When Collins purchased the property in 2004, it was listed in the York County Route 17 Revitalization Committee’s top 10 most blighted properties along that corridor.

“We’re so happy to have Custom Design Works in the County and grateful for their significant contribution to the corridor,” said Kristi Olsen-Hayes, director of economic and tourism development for the County. “The demolition of the dilapidated house and construction of their beautiful office space transformed a very prominent corner. It’s seen by everyone passing into York County from Newport News along Route 17. It was one of the first major improvements made during the revitalization initiative, and we are proud that Custom Design Works continues to thrive as part of the York County business community.”

The new building was designed by Collins and built by his team. While it represented a significant contribution to revitalization, for Custom Design Works it represented something personal—one of the company’s brick masons grew up in the old house on that property. In recognition of his employee, Collins incorporated bricks from the original home into the new building.

“I wanted him to know that the history—his history—was important,” said Collins.

Collins also designed and built the Yorktown home he shares with his wife, Jennifer.

“York County has been good for us,” he said. “And it’s very central to where we work, from the Southside to Richmond.”  Custom Design Works boasts a team of more than 60 employees, including close to a dozen building and remodeling crews. At its heart though, it remains a family business.

Collins’ son Dale is the production supervisor; his granddaughter and ex-wife take care of the bookkeeping; and his sister and brother-in-law are part of the clean-up crew that go to clients’ houses at the end of each day.

Collins is committed to ensuring his clients are comfortable when his crews come into their home to work. As a result, while a standard background check typically goes back 7 to 10 years, Custom Design Works requires that all employees undergo a 25-year background check. He also requires this of subcontractors they use for HVAC, electrical and plumbing services.

“I want to make sure people feel at ease when we come into their home to do work for them,” said Collins, “I feel very blessed to have employees who are not only top-notch workers, but also have good, clean backgrounds. I think it helps to set that level of trust early on.”

Collins said he also believes what sets them apart is their price point, which they are often able to keep lower than their competition because the majority of work is done by employees rather than subcontractors. Custom Design Works nets additional discounts through maintaining longtime relationships with suppliers—many dating back 40 years. He scores further price cuts by paying in cash and compensating his few subcontractors weekly.

When Collins passes along these discounts to his clients, he said, it helps them maximize bang for their buck. Best of all, he likes knowing they’ve increased the resale value of their home. Budget is just one consideration in the collaborative process. Collins must balance out the clients’ wants and needs with his experience and ideas… as sometimes giving the client what they (think they) want would yield disastrous results, if not for Collins’ insights. That’s the real value in working with a builder who’s looking out for you.

“The main goal is to hear what is most important to the client,” said Collins. “If we can do that plus increase the resale value, that’s the ideal situation. It’s not done to upsell, but to ensure that the work we do has lasting value for the homeowner.”

Custom Design Works has won numerous awards, including:

  • Top 50 remodeling contractors in the nation by Remodeling Magazine
  • Most creative and original in the Parade of Homes
  • Peninsula Remodelers Council Award for Collins’ leadership as chairman
  • Peninsula Home Builders Association award for Collins’ chairmanship of the organization’s community project, Home for the Homeless.

Many of Collins’ customers have become friends. In fact, just during the length of the interview for this article, several customers came in joking with Collins, heading over to the kitchen for a cup of coffee, and laughing about the disappearing donuts that he bought for everyone—something he apparently does on a regular basis.

As for the future of Custom Design Works, Collins is hoping to expand the number of jobs his team can take on. To do this, they depend heavily on referrals, which is not something they take lightly. They even offer customers who provide a referral that leads to business 1% of the job cost, making it a win-win.

Collins has no plans to retire any time soon. Dale, who is also a partial owner, is set to take over when the time comes—but that’s a longstanding joke among the team. Dale said his dad might be 80 years old by the time that happens.

“I want to work as long as possible,” said Collins, “It’s not just business, it’s fun!”
