Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old; preferably 21 years of age.
- Self Sufficient/personal source of income.
- Provide a safe and healthy home.
- Have enough living space to care for a child.
- Willing to work as a team member with the Department, birth parents, schools and others.
- Able to help a child cope with separation from his/her family and with the effects of abuse and neglect.
- Be able to let go when the time comes.
Process
If you are considering becoming a resource parent, contact the Family Services Specialist at 890-3787. You will be given more detailed information about the application process and training. Basic requirements include:
- Child abuse/neglect record check
- Completion of a state approved training program
- Criminal background check
- Meeting with a Family Service Specialist to discuss:
- Review state and local foster care requirements
- Roles and responsibilities of being a resource parent
- Show that your home is a safe environment for your foster child
- Personal references
- Providing employment history
- Providing medical information
