Become a Resource Parent

Requirements


  • Must be at least 18 years old; preferably 21 years of age.
  • Self Sufficient/personal source of income.
  • Provide a safe and healthy home.
  • Have enough living space to care for a child.
  • Willing to work as a team member with the Department, birth parents, schools and others.
  • Able to help a child cope with separation from his/her family and with the effects of abuse and neglect.
  • Be able to let go when the time comes.

Process


If you are considering becoming a resource parent, contact the Family Services Specialist at 890-3787. You will be given more detailed information about the application process and training. Basic requirements include:
  • Child abuse/neglect record check
  • Completion of a state approved training program
  • Criminal background check
  • Meeting with a Family Service Specialist to discuss:
    • Review state and local foster care requirements
    • Roles and responsibilities of being a resource parent
    • Show that your home is a safe environment for your foster child
  • Personal references
  • Providing employment history
  • Providing medical information
