There are a variety of reasons that could be the cause of non-collection. Here are the most common: 

• Too close to another item for automated truck to collect (must be three feet away from any other item) 
• Must be out by 7 a.m. on your collection day (late set out)
• Overloaded (more than 260 pounds in weight)
• Overstuffed (lid not closed and trash would spill when lifted)
• Opening of the trash container not facing the street
• Have more containers than you are paying for (other containers not collected)
• See tag left on container for other reasons

Our trash contractor observes at least the following holidays: New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Collections that fall on these holidays will be delayed by one day and each collection day that follows the holiday will be delayed by one day (for example, if the holiday is on a Tuesday, Tuesday's collections will be on Wednesday, Wednesday's will be on Thursday, etc.). All other holidays will have regular collection.

You may put bagged leaves or grass clippings in your container for pickup. Please make sure that you do not overload your container when doing so as the truck cannot lift the container if it weighs more than 260 pounds or if the lid is not closed on the container.

Latex Paint

• If the paint is old and dry, you can leave the lid off and dispose of in your regular trash.
• If the paint is still a liquid, you can add kitty litter or other absorbent material such as sawdust or mulch, and stir it well until it becomes very thick and will not drip or run.  Once you’ve done this, you can leave the lid off and dispose of it in your regular trash.  Please note:  this ONLY APPLIES to latex (water based) paint. 

Latex or Oil Based Paint

• VPPSA provides scheduled Household Chemical Collection/Computer Recycling events for residents of its member communities on the Peninsula.  See schedule
  
  

VPPSA holds a total of 13 household chemical collection events per year and accepts a variety of paints, fuels, solvents, pesticides, automotive products and other chemicals from residents of Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County.  Many computer-related items accepted for recycling at these events as well.  

Computer Recycling

• Since 2001, our contractor, Computer Recycling of Virginia, has erased every hard drive using software that meets or exceeds all industry standards, including the NIST 800-88. Once the wipe process is complete, any hard drive that fails the wipe process is physically destroyed.
• The mission of Computer Recycling of Virginia, Inc. (CRVA) is to place educationally–useful equipment into Virginia’s schools and non-profit organizations free of charge, while promoting electronics recycling throughout Virginia.

Republic Services will accept credit only for dropping off trash – must have an account with them or a credit card; VPPSA will take cash, check, or credit at the VPPSA compost facility.

If it is still in working order, please consider donating it to a local charitable organization.  If not, you can bring it to the Waste Management Center, 145 Goodwin Neck Road, for disposal.  If you are scheduling a bulk item pickup at your home, you may include TVs with the remainder of your bulk items.  TVs are not accepted at our computer recycling events.  For more information, please call (757) 890-3780.

If you need more propane, you can have the tank refilled or exchanged at a local retailer.  A propane tank exchange is less expensive than buying a new one. 

It is also possible to recycle your empty propane tank.  Some retailers will accept unused or partially used propane tanks and will recycle them.

If you are unable to take it to a retail location, Waste Management Division will accept completely empty propane tanks at the metal recycling area.

If it is still in good condition and free of stains, rips, etc., please consider donating it to a local charitable organization.  If you are scheduling a bulk item pickup at your home, you may include a mattress/box spring as one of your bulk items.  If you subscribe to the County's curbside garbage service, you can bring it to the Waste Management Center, 145 Goodwin Neck Road, for disposal.  Contractors, residents from other localities and County residents who do not subscribe to the County’s curbside collection program will be charged $33.00 per mattress/$33.00 per box spring.
