October 3, 2025Celebrate Fire Prevention Week, Discover Yorktown with VisitWidget, Explore Autumn Events & Learn Genealogy Tips Spark Awareness During Fire Prevention Week! Fire Prevention Week is almost here! Each year, it’s observed during the week of October 9 to honor the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a tragic event that forever changed the way communities approach fire safety. This year’s observance runs October 5–11 and focuses on a growing concern in modern households: lithium-ion battery safety. The 2025 theme, “Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely,” encourages everyone to take simple steps to reduce fire risks. Always purchase safety-tested devices, charge them in safe areas away from flammable materials, and dispose of old batteries properly through approved recycling programs. Visit our Fire Prevention Week webpage to learn more about protecting your home and loved ones. Plus, don’t miss our Fire Station Open House on Saturday, October 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Fire Station #1, 118 Dare Road. Meet your local firefighters and deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, explore fire trucks and equipment, and enjoy family-friendly activities. It’s a fun and educational way to celebrate fire safety together!
