Household Chemical, Computer Recycling & Paper Shredding Event York County will host its next VPPSA collection event on Saturday, September 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on County Drive (off Goodwin Neck Road). Residents may drop off household chemicals such as paints, fuels, automotive products, and lawn or garden supplies, as well as select computer equipment including desktops, laptops, servers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, and cell phones. Please note that televisions will not be accepted. A shredding truck will also be available for on-site document destruction—citizens may bring up to five boxes of personal paperwork to shred. Proof of residency may be required. For details on acceptable materials, visit VPPSA.org or call York County Waste Management at (757) 890-3780. Early Voting Starts Friday, September 19 Election Day is not too far off. But you don’t have to wait until Tuesday, November 4, to cast your vote. Vote by mail or in person at the Registrar’s locations in the Washington Square Shopping Center (on Route 17 in Grafton) and Victory Village Shopping Center (on Mooretown Road in Lightfoot), from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday through October 31. Voting in person is also available the two Saturdays before the election: October 25 and November 1, 9 am-5 pm. BugFest Returning for 6th Year What’s the buzz? BugFest is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever! Join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, at Grafton Middle School (405 Grafton Drive). This free event features crafts, over 40 tables or activities to visit, and BUGS! Some participating groups include the ODU Tick Team, Colonial Beekeepers, The Butterfly Society of Virginia, Master Gardeners, Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, and more! For more information, call York County Mosquito Control at (757) 890-3790. Experience British Camp Life in Yorktown, Sept. 6–7 Lock up your gunpowder! The British will arrive in Yorktown this weekend! From 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on September 6 and 7, take a step back in time to see what life was like in the British Camp before the arrival of the American and French forces on September 28, 1781. Historic Main Street will be transformed with military drills, camp life demonstrations, costumed interpreters, and more at Yorktown 1781 Before the Siege! This event is part of the Virginia250 Celebration, and it is free and open to the public.

Honoring Our Hometown Heroes: First Responders Market Returns to Yorktown They are the unsung heroes of our community, and we’re celebrating them at our Yorktown Market Days’ First Responders Market from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 6. It's a morning dedicated to our firefighters, sheriff's deputies, 911 & emergency communications dispatchers, public works employees, and other first responders who keep our community safe. Several emergency vehicles and officials will be on site to educate visitors and answer questions. At the same time, you can shop for seasonal produce, baked goods, and art from local vendors. The free, accessible Yorktown Trolley will be in operation beginning at 11 a.m. during this event. Rhythms on the Riverwalk Heats Up with The KOS Band! Get ready to move and groove with The KOS Band at our next Rhythms on the Riverwalk Concert on Thursday, September 11! Known as Virginia’s premier dance band for over 40 years, this powerhouse ensemble plays beach music, Motown classics, Top 40 hits, and tunes from the ’60s to today! Join us from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Riverwalk Landing for a night of dancing under the stars!

NEW! York Gov Series Launches Next Week York County is launching its first-ever York Gov Series next week—a free, 10-week program designed to give residents an inside look at the departments, people, and processes that keep our county running. This inaugural class has already reached capacity, but the Gov Series will be offered again in the future. Details about upcoming sessions will be announced in Citizen News Weekly and on the County website. SKATE, RATTLE, & ROLL is Back! Beginners and pros alike will enjoy skating under sparkling-colored lights to popular music provided by a disc jockey. Grades K-6 start September 5th from 6pm-8pm at Dare Elementary; Middle School theme nights Grades 6-8 from 8:30-10:30 pm, ONLY on select Fridays. $8/Session Cash only at the door. Transfer Station Exterior Improvements Begin September 10 Beginning September 10, the Waste Management Transfer Station at 145 Goodwin Neck Road, Yorktown will undergo exterior improvements. The project includes replacing the building’s wall panels and roof system, as well as repairing or replacing any damaged structural supports as needed. - Wall panel replacement will take place during both normal and after-hours work.
- Roof panel replacement will take place after regular working hours only.
The work is expected to take approximately 45 days to complete, with no service interruptions expected.
