Water Tips, Storm Prep & National Night Out Highlights

National Night Out

National Night Out Appreciation
We extend our thanks to the personnel from the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office and Department of Fire and Life Safety for their participation in this year's National Night Out (8/5). Their efforts to connect with the community, share safety information, and build strong neighborhood relationships help to make this event a success each year. From handing out stickers and fire helmets to the kids, to chatting with parents about safety programs, their presence at this year's event will leave a lasting impact on those who attended. Of course, the K-9s and the fire trucks were big hits with the kids!  View a video recap of the event to see what National Night Out is all about.

National Farmers Market

National Farmers Market Week Comes to Riverwalk Landing
Stock up on healthy options for your family by stopping by our Yorktown Market Days on Saturday, August 9, as we celebrate National Farmers Market Week! From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., make your way to Riverwalk Landing for a great selection of locally sourced fruits, veggies, eggs, and meats as we recognize the impact farmers markets have on their communities. That’s not all! Shop from one of our local vendors selling beautiful woodwork, glassware, jewelry, and more. You can also enjoy a cooking demonstration by Riverwalk Restaurant, the music of The Fifes and Drums of Yorktown and Ritchie Beard, and a “Guess that Produce” Game. We’ll see you at the market!

Big Hair, Big Hits, Big Fun – The Deloreans Rock Yorktown!
Dust off the shoulder pads and break out the fanny packs! We’re going back to the eighties at the next Sounds of Summer Concert on Thursday, August 14! From 6:30 to 9 p.m., enjoy a performance by the one-and-only Deloreans at Riverwalk Landing! The group is known for their dynamic costumes, unstoppable energy, and ability to bring down the house. Before the entertainment begins, arrive early and enjoy dinner or dessert at any of Historic Yorktown’s waterfront restaurants including Water Street Grille, Carrot Tree, Umi Sushi, Ben & Jerry’s, and the Yorktown Pub.

Join us on Monday, August 18, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center (5301 Longhill Road, Williamsburg) for the Historic Triangle Community Resilience Workshop. Hosted by the RAFT (Resilience Adaptation Feasibility Tool) team and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, this event invites Williamsburg, York County, and James City County residents and workers to help identify priorities that strengthen our community’s ability to respond to hazards and stressors while supporting long-term economic and social well-being.

Childcare for potty-trained children ages 3+ will be available. Register by Friday, August 15, at RAFT Website or walk in the day of the event.

Coleman Bridge Goes Toll-Free—A Historic Win for Drivers
Great news for Virginia motorists! Beginning August 8, drivers can cross the Coleman Bridge toll-free. This iconic double-swing span—the largest of its kind in the nation—links Yorktown and Gloucester Point, serving as a crucial connector for families, commuters, and businesses. With tolls eliminated, Virginians are expected to save nearly $60 million, making travel more convenient and affordable for all.

Hurricane Season Heats Up – Do You Know Your Zone?
With forecasters calling for an active hurricane season and late summer often bringing increased storm activity, now is the time to review your emergency plan. Severe weather can lead to power outages, road closures, and property damage, so it’s important to be prepared. Build or update your emergency kit with essentials like medications, food, water, important documents, and other critical supplies. Just as important—know your evacuation zone and plan your route should an evacuation be necessary. Even if your property isn’t prone to flooding, the roads you depend on might not be. Visit Know Your Zone to find your evacuation area and learn more about staying safe during severe weather events. Additional emergency preparedness resources are available online.

Additional Notes for the Week… The seal coating and restriping of the parking lot across from the Watermen’s Museum has been rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 11–12, due to forecasted inclement weather.

The Planning Commission will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, August 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room of York Hall.  See the agenda here.
