York County Budget Hearing, Market Days Season Kick-off, and Summer Camps Registration Opens

Reminder: Public Hearing on Proposed FY26 Budget and 2025 Tax Rates 
The Board of Supervisors’ meeting this upcoming Tuesday (4/15) includes the FY2026 budget public hearing. Starting at 7 p.m., citizens will have the opportunity to share their input with the Board of Supervisors for consideration before the scheduled adoption on May 6. Feedback may also be given by leaving a voice mail message on 757-890-3220 or sending an email to the Board at bos@yorkcounty.gov.  All of the proposed budget documents, FAQ’s and presentations are available on the County’s website.  

Go Green Market

Yorktown Market Days 2025 Season Kick-off
It’s not easy being green, but it is important! We’re kicking off our 2025 Yorktown Market Days season with the Go Green Market this Saturday (4/12) 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Riverwalk Landing. Grab a free reusable bag from our information tent, then start shopping and learning. Be sure to go by and see the “special” exhibitors offering free giveaways (supplies are limited) along with engaging children’s activities. The whole family will leave the market with a greater understanding of how to be better stewards of the environment. Our regular local vendors will also be there, selling unique artwork, delicious baked goods, fresh produce, and much more. The free, accessible Yorktown Trolley runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As always, in the event of inclement weather, the market will move to the lower level of the parking garage.  This special market is a joint collaboration of York County's Department of Public Works and the York County Beautification Committee. 

York County History Day Schedule

Sat., April 12 is York County VA250 History Day 
Join a celebration of York County History from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday highlighting the American Revolution and Civil War. Enjoy music, military demonstrations, crafts, and more at the Watermen's Museum and York Hall. This is a perfect day to ride the free trolley through Yorktown. First stop -York Hall at 310 Main St. where you’ll find the York County Historical Museum. The trolley also stops at The Watermen’s Museum hosting their own living history activities including cannon drills! Catch a free trolley ride, take a guided tour, and be sure you take in all the history and ambiance of Historic Yorktown. Details here.  

This Weekend Includes 1781 Living History 
Reenactors of the 1st Rhode Island Infantry Regiment make a special visit to the Colonial National Historical Park with first-person and third-person perspectives on the American Revolution. See them in action from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 13. The weekend exercises focus on the experiences of freedmen who fought for independence. All programs will take place at the Colonial National Historical Park Visitor Center and are subject to change or cancellation. Find event information here or call 757-898-2410.  

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Hosts Community Forum
The public is invited on Thursday, April 24 - 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. (159 Goodwin Neck Road) to hear directly from law enforcement leaders and learn more about the safety issues impacting our community. Expect to hear about topics from technology and crime statistics to school safety and mental health response. We encourage open dialogue and welcome your questions. Other topics that may come up are Flock cameras, involvement and limitations in immigration enforcement, and current scams. Registration is recommended, please sign up here. 

Summer Camp Registration

Summer Camp Registrations Begin Next Week 
Mark your calendars for Monday (4/14) when York County begins taking registrations for summer youth camps! This year’s options include Art, Sports, Eco-Art Nature, Summer Fun, Field Trip Fever I&II, and Special Recreation. More information on locations and pricing is available on the Parks and Recreation website.  

Department of Housing and Community Development

Community Meeting to Discuss Planning Grant  
The York County Division of Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization is hosting a Community Meeting at Magruder Elementary School (cafeteria) this Thursday 4/17 at 6 p.m. to discuss an upcoming planning grant request with the Department of Housing and Community Development. The grant will be used to assess the needs of housing rehabilitation along the Penniman corridor including, but not limited to, Charleston Heights, Middletowne Farms, Nelson Circle/Nelson Park, Parkway Estates, Queenswood, Springfield Terrace, Williams Terrace, York Court/York Terrace, Penniman Road, and Queens Creek Road. Registration is open for the Annual Healthy Aging Conference 
Embracing Growth and Wisdom Across the Lifespan is the mission for the 28th Annual Healthy Aging Conference, taking place on Thursday, April 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at King of Glory Lutheran Church (4897 Longhill Road, Williamsburg). This event is free and open to the public. Dr. Jenny Inker, Associate Professor of Gerontology at VCU and Co-Program Director for the Assisted Living Administration Specialty Area, will deliver the keynote presentation titled “Embracing Elderhood: The Adventure of a Lifetime.” The conference also includes a continental breakfast and other engaging topics and speakers. There is a vendor area, door prizes, and a 30-minute energizer session to keep you moving! Additional Notes for the Week . . . Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has implemented a long-term traffic shift on I-64 west from east of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit (exit 234) to the New Kent/James City County line (mile marker 224.3) for roadway widening operations as part of the “Segment C” section of the I-64 Gap Widening project.
