Free Public Lecture

Free Public Lecture: An Afternoon with Patrick Henry 
This Sunday, March 9, performer and interpreter Richard Schumann portrays the part of Patrick Henry reflecting on his life in the Colonial Capitol of Williamsburg in 1798. Presented by the York County Historical Committee in association with the Yorktown Virginia250 Committee, the lecture will commence at 2:00 pm in York Hall, 301 Main Street. Mr. Schumann studied Acting and Shakespeare at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York City. In 1981 he subcontracted with the National Park Service to perform Living History at the Nelson House on Main Street for the Bicentennial celebration and has lived in York County ever since. His well versed in Patrick Henry lore, having portrayed him since 1997 with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.  This event is free and open to the public. Find out more here.  

Tornado Drill

Virginia Statewide Tornado Drill 
Families, organizations, schools, businesses, and individuals across the Commonwealth are invited to participate in the Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 11. Each year, the Tornado drill is held to emphasize community preparedness in case our region experiences one of these severe weather threats. The drill highlights the importance of being ready in case a tornado strikes, and is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 10-14. More information is available on the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s website. 

York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office

Gun Safety Class 
Sheriff Montgomery is pleased to offer another Gun Safety class to the Citizens of York County and Poquoson 18 or older. You will need to bring your photo ID. This free class will be held on March 19 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Law Enforcement building, 159 Goodwin Neck Road. This is a general handgun safety course and not a concealed carry course, although it does meet the safety course criteria required to apply for a concealed carry permit. A certificate of completion will be given at the end of the 2-hour course. Please understand that this is not a hands-on course. It is a lecture only. Sign up here.  

YPSO Identity Theft & Scams Workshop Rescheduled
The class, previously cancelled for snow, is now scheduled for Monday, March 10, 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Building, 159 Goodwin Neck Road. If you have questions about attending, please contact Deputy Kevin Taylor at 757-890-3639 or by email at kevin.taylor@yorkcounty.gov. 

Be a Better Recycler
Not sure what to do with your trash? York County Waste Management can help with two new online tools. Check out the Waste Wizard and Material Sorting Game. You can input the item in question and find out if it can be recycled, trashed, or dropped off. Sorting your garbage correctly is a big deal and makes a difference. Additional Notes for the Week . . . Don’t forget to Spring Forward this weekend when Daylight Saving Time kicks in. It’s also a great time to check those batteries in your smoke detectors.
