York County Transfer Station to Close Early Saturday, February 1
The transfer station will only close tomorrow at noon (Saturday, February 1) to complete some final repairs.  The citizen drop-off, recycling center, metal recycling area, and VPPSA Compost Facility will remain open as usual.  The transfer station is scheduled to reopen on Monday, February 3. 

4-H Camp Registration

Volunteers Needed for 4-H Camps
York/Poquoson Virginia Cooperative Extension is looking for adult volunteers (20 or older) to assist with the week-long 4-H overnight camp August 4-8. Training is provided and volunteers receive 50% off registration fees. The more volunteers that participate, the more campers are allowed to attend. Take 3 Steps to Save a Life

Hands Only CPR Class Being Offered During Heart Month
February is American Heart Month, an opportunity to learn how to stay heart healthy.  Start taking an active role in improving your health and reducing your risk of heart disease by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure. Also in February, learn how to save lives by participating in the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety’s “Take 3 Steps to Save a Life” program: 1) Call 9-1-1, 2) Perform CPR, and 3) retrieve and use an AED (automated external defibrillator). Fire and Life Safety is offering FREE Hands Only CPR Classes during the month: Feb. 3 at the Tabb Library; Feb. 10 at the Griffin-Yeates Center (1490 Government Road); Feb. 18 at the Voter Registrar’s Office in Victory Village Shopping Center (Mooretown Road); and Feb. 24 at the Yorktown Library. All classes are from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information and to sign up for a class, please visit the website.  

Protect Yourself from Identity Theft and Scams
The York Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is hosting a class on how to protect yourself from online predators. This FREE seminar, geared toward adults and seniors, is scheduled for February 19, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Sheriff's Office, 159 Goodwin Neck Road. No registration is required.

Virginia Civil War Narratives to be Shared by Historian and Author
On Sunday February 16 join Jeffrey Toalson, speaker and author on the Civil War, as he discusses his book “Ma, We Got Nuthin’ Here But Mud & Muskeeters” presented by the York County Historical Committee. Mud & Muskeeters is a first-person history of the Civil War on the lower Virginia Peninsula from June 1861 to June 1862. Jeff Toalson uses the voices of 65 soldiers, sailors, doctors, farmers, nurses, and many others – Union and Confederate- to tell their stories, quoting from their diaries, letters to loved ones, and journals. The lecture at 2:00 pm in York Hall, 301 Main Street, is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing after the lecture. 

Additional Notes for the Week . . . The Senior Center February Calendar is now available and staff is ready to take your registration… New budget videos have been posted to the website. Current topics include: Revenue Sources, Real Estate Tax Assessments, and a question about capping taxes for seniors.  The next meeting of the Board of Supervisors is February 4. Be sure to look online for agendas, meeting presentations, weekly correspondence, and more.
